Happy New Year

Wow, another year has come and gone, and a fresh new year has begun. My first instinct is to thing “gee, I didn’t really do much again, eh?” But this year I stopped myself and took a real good look back at some of the things I’d accomplished. It was actually a pretty good year, and a fairly eventful one at that.

Here’s a quick summary:

In the spring of this year I took a giant leap (with a little push from friends) and applied for the Great Canadian Baking Show. I never expected to get past the application but then two days later the phone rang. I was at work at the time and paced outside on the phone for 20mins with everyone inside anxiously wondering what was happening. The noise level in the shop when I announced that they wanted me to audition in person was deafening. LOL. At the audition I met two people who helped me through that day more than they’ll ever fully understand. Kimberly had done it before and was so at ease that I instantly was too. And Lisa was so full of excitement that I was fuelled by her energy. It didn’t matter anymore if I succeeded or failed because I’d already made it further than I ever thought possible. Much of that day is a bit of a blur of excitement, but I don’t think I’ll ever forget Bruno Feldeisen being called over to taste my croissants, and the look of pleasant surprise on his face. Best moment of 2019 (aside from the birth of my niece). Would have been fun to actually have made it onto the show, but I’m happy none the less.

Also this year I turned 40. I’m not going to say I’m really struggling with it, because I’m not, but I have had a few moments where I’ve wondered what it is I’m doing and what I want to be doing in the future. I’m not quite sure yet but I think I’ll know it when I see it.

Another great baking moment for me was taking the Bake for a Living course at Seraphina’s Oven. While I do feel like I almost need to take it again to really wrap my head about all the ins and outs of running a baking business, it did give me a good glimpse at the inside. We’ll see what the year brings but I’m tempted to stick my toes back in the farmers market waters. I’m not going to make any grand New Year’s promise but I’m open to it. Provided I can figure out how to create croissants en masse and consistently.

I’m sure there are a million more small moments that have all added up to make 2019 a pretty great year, but these are just a few of the larger moments that stand out. I can’t wait to see what 2020 has in store!

Happy New Year to you all! Thank you for joining me on this crazy ride! Do you have any New Year’s Resolutions? Any goals you’ve set for yourself? Don’t hesitate to share below.
